Orpheus Male Chorus performs in Scottsdale
Staff Report ~ 12/14/2011
The Orpheus Male Chorus, Arizona’s longest continually performing choral organization, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday as part of the Pinnacle Concert Series at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church.
Founded in 1929, the Orpheus Male Chorus has performed widely throughout the Valley and nationally as well as internationally. The group is composed entirely of volunteer singers who come from all walks of life but who all share a love of excellent men's singing.
The group’s performance includes humor, a strong feeling for Phoenix history and tradition, dedication and professionally blended voices.
Membership has varied over the years from as few as 21 members during World War II, when many of the men, including the director served in the military, to as many as 100 members, with a list of alternates who waited for the opportunity to be part of the group. The members have included teachers, students, businessmen, ministers, attorneys, doctors, salesmen, law enforcement officers and construction workers among others.
Senator Barry Goldwater was a regular contributor to and public supporter of the group. Directors have waved the baton in front of the group for as little as a year and as long as 33 years. They have been as old as 76 and as young as 24 while leading the group.
Tickets for Thursday’s show are $20 for general admission and $13 for main floor rear. Student tickets are $7.
Pinnacle Presbyterian Church is located at 25150 N. Pima Road in Scottsdale. For information on the show call 480-585-9448 or go to pinnacleconcerts.org. For information on the Orpheus Male Chorus go to Orpheus.org.
