Anthem readies to host triathlon

The 4th annual Anthem Sprint Triathlon is set for 7 a.m. Saturday
getting started from the Anthem Community Center.
The event, which is reverse order of a typical triathlon, in that
it starts with a run and ends with a swim consists of a 5 kilometer
run, a 20 kilometer bike race and a 400 meter swim, typically draws
about 300 participants.
Individuals can participate in all three portions of the event or
teams can register as a group with each member taking one of three
legs.
Cost to register for the full triathlon is $75 if done by Friday or
$90 the day of the race. Cost for a relay team is $125 before Friday
or $150 the day of the race.
Race director Jeremy Graham said that typically the men’s race gets
started at 7 a.m. with the women following at 7:15 a.m.
The course starts with runners on the paved Anthem Trail system and
sidewalks. From the west side of the bridge, connecting the park and
the Community Center, runners head south on the Anthem Trail System.
They then go south on the trail crossing Whitman, then Memorial to
Gavillan Peak. Continuing south on Gavillan Peak they turnaround and
go North on Gavillan Peak to Anthem Way, before heading east back
to the Community Center.
The bike route will exit the Community Center on Freedom Way with
riders heading North on Freedom Way to Anthem Way. They then go east
on Anthem Way to Daisy Mountain, then south on Daisy Mountain to Dedication,
north on Dedication to Memorial, west on Memorial to Freedom then
North on Freedom where they complete the first of three laps.
The event closes with 400 a yard swim in the pool.
Last year’s winner on the women’s side was Corinne Frayer, turning
in a time of 1 hour, seven minutes and 15 seconds while the men’s
winner was Kevin Taddonio in a time of 58 minutes and 47 seconds.
Late registration begins at 5 a.m. on Saturday. Following the race
awards will be given out at 9:30 a.m. Winners will be awarded for
the top finishes in each age group (5 year increments) beginning with
10-14. Awards will also be given to the top finisher in the Clydesdales
division, for men 200 pounds and up, Athenas, for women 150 pounds
and up and for the top relay team.
