The Arizona State champion High Desert Little League softball team went 2-2 at the Western Regional Tournament in Vancouver, Washington. In a 10-team field the squad with players from Anthem, Desert Hills and Tramonto finished third in their pool of five teams. The top two teams advanced to the tournament semifinals and a chance to vie for a spot in the Little League World Series, which starts Thursday in Portland, Ore.

High Desert Softball All-Stars fall short of World Series

The High Desert Little League Softball team consisting of Anthem, Desert Hills and Tramonto girls ages 12 and under finished with a 2-2 mark at the Western Regional Tournament in Vancouver, Washington, which concluded Sunday.
With a spot in the Little League Softball World Series, which gets under way on Thursday in Portland, the team from Arizona finished third in its pool, which included
Idaho, Montana, Washington and Northern California.
After opening tournament play with an 8-1 loss to Northern California on Aug. 1 the Arizona team needed to win their final three pool games to advance to the tournament semifinals.
While they got the first win, beating Idaho by a 3-1 margin on Aug. 2, Montana defeated High Desert saw its hopes of advancing dashed when they were defeated by Montana by a score of 8-3 on Aug. 4.
The North Valley team did rebound to finish the tournament with an even record by claiming a 14-2 win over Washington on Thursday.
The team’s roster includes Amanda Preach, Aubrey Ledbetter, Hannah Demers, Elizabeth Bostwick, Brianna James, Haley Villegas, Sammi Gadverry, Katie Moore[Soft Break]Brice Phebus, Morgan Smith, Elisabeth Giddings. The team is coached by manager Jim James along with coaches Mike Phebus, Joe Ledbetter, Steve Bostwick and Conrad Smith.
The team, the first Desert Hills team in the 11-year history of the league to advance to regionals, earned the honor by going 4-0 in the 12-team state tournament late in July.
