Heard Museum North offers free Saturday admission

It’s hard to call anything brisk in Arizona this time of year, but Heard Museum North Scottsdale curator Janet Cantley said foot traffic has been steady
this summer.
One of the draws has been patrons taking advantage of the museum’s offer of free Saturday admission to the facility, located at 32633 N. Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, throughout the month of July.
The North Scottsdale location, which has served as home since 2006, is open daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
While the North venue coordinates its displays with the central Phoenix location, at 2301 N. Central Ave., Cantley said she also tries to bring various things to the North location that will specifically appeal to the locals.
“People think the Heard Museum and they think textiles, pots and jewelry, but we just had a fun exhibit of artists books featuring Native American culture,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of response to our lecture series called Nights at North which we run during the fall and spring.”
Aside from the Wednesday night lecture series the museum also offers film series as well as book signings.
And beyond the free Saturdays in July the museum has free admission the second Sunday of each month, with Aug. 8 serving as the next chance to take advantage
of the opportunity.
Another display Cantley is eagerly anticipating is a family friendly one entitled “More Than Child’s Play: American Indian Dolls”.
The display, which will kick-off on Aug. 14 and run through Jan. 2, features a variety of dolls in terms of their materials and forms.
“I think it’s a great exhibit,” Cantley said. “We have representative pieces from all over the U.S. Canada, and Mexico, as well as dolls featuring various time periods from the 1870s up to beautifully crafted contemporary designs.”
Cantley will lead a tour of the exhibit beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Following the exhibit's opening on Aug. 14, there is a Fry Bread Sundaes Social with ice cream from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Aug. 15.
The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. For information call 480-488-9817 or go to www.heard.org/north.
The museum also features The Café at Heard Museum North, which is open daily from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. as well as a gift shop.
