The Silver Spur Saloon and Eatery was the site of a giant 78th birthday party for Sheriff Joe Arpaio, combined with a political campaign celebration for J. D. Hayworth, Republican candidate for the United States Senate.
More than 500 people showed-up at the old-West restaurant in Cave Creek on Saturday night, for a party that lasted from 5 p.m. to midnight. With a band, dancing, food, and political speeches, the evening was billed as "The Biggest Best Dang Birthday Bash" for the long-time Sheriff of Maricopa County and served as a fund-raiser for Hayworth’s campaign.
Arpaio, commenting on television advertisements of Senator John McCain touring the border with Mexico, "McCain finally figured out where the border is."
Arpaio, who is internationally recognized for his strong position on illegal immigration, noted, "He's (McCain) never bothered to ask me for advice on illegal immigration."
Among those attending was Anthem resident Sam Crump, a candidate for Congress in the Third Congressional District. A former state legislator for the North Valley, Crump is in a campaign against nine other candidates for the seat being vacated by John Shadegg. Crump said, "I was excited to be there on a beautiful evening in Cave Creek with the world's toughest sheriff, Joe Arpaio, and our great candidate for the U.S. Senate, J.D. Hayworth." Crump is the only candidate for the congressional seat to have officially endorsed Hayworth for the Senate.
Hundreds of guests had the opportunity to meet with the Sheriff and with Hayworth to discuss issues and extend greetings. Additionally congressional candidates David Schweikert and Vernon Parker were also in attendance.
