Just like his father some 31 years ago Major League Baseball has come
calling for the skills possessed by 2010 Cactus Shadows graduate Logan
Davis.
Davis, the son of Mark Davis, the 1989 Cy Young Award winner as the
closer for the San Diego Padres, was drafted by the Colorado Rockies
on Wednesday in the 38th round of the June Amateur draft.
Davis, the 1,160th player picked was following along online when he
heard his name called.
“I’d talked to a few teams that said they had interest in me, but
I really had no idea how high or low I’d go,” he said. “I have some
other friends who got drafted, so I was listening for their names
too. When I heard my name it was a great feeling. I was hoping I’d
get picked, but it was a surprise to actually here my name.”
As of Friday, Davis, a three-year varsity player for the Falcons,
was waiting to hear what plans the Rockies have for the shortstop.
Barring something unexpected Davis said he anticipates going the college
route, and playing at Hofstra, after signing a letter of intent back
in November.
“I think Hofstra is most likely,” he said. “I like the school. It
will be a change to go to the east coast. I’m looking forward to it.
They’ve shown interest in me since the start of my junior year.”
After a three-year varsity career, that saw Davis help the Falcons
to a 58-27 record and three state tournament appearances at shortstop
and as the team’s leadoff man, the 18-year-old knows what he needs
to do to succeed at the next level.
“I can improve a lot and the biggest thing will just be getting bigger
and stronger,” he said.
In November Hofstra coach Patrick Anderson said he was looking forward
to adding the Cave Creek resident to
the program.
“Logan brings excitement to the field every day,” he said. “His size,
athleticism and his knowledge of the game from being around such a
high level of baseball with his dad’s career will allow him to make
an immediate impact on our program. When recruiting Logan we saw such
a competitive edge to him that he will not be fazed when playing at
such a high level that we play at.”
Davis is spending the summer playing on a Connie Mack team, keeping
his skills sharp before continuing his career at either the college
level or in the Rockies organization.
After being drafted No. 1 overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in
1979 Mark Davis debuted in the Majors in 1980. During a 15-season
career he spent time with the Phillies, San Francisco Giants, San
Diego Padres, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.
He currently works in the
Royals organization.
