Three Daisy Mountain fire fighters, who were sent to the hospital
with respiratory ailments late Thursday evening following a fire in
New River, will all be back to
work this week.
Daisy Mountain Fire Marshal Phillip Dyer said that the three were
treated for smoke inhalation and that while one of the three may miss
a couple of shifts all have been released and should make a full recovery.
The fire that caused the injuries took place near Seventh Street and
Honda Bow Road. Dyer said what started as a small porch fire unexpectedly
flared up into something much bigger.
“It was really pretty spectacular,” he said. “Engine 141 had the fire
knocked down and everything appeared under control when it really
flared up and the fire spread quickly. There were some accelerants
inside the home that really made it go.”
Drug paraphernalia in the residence led authorities to believe methamphetamine
may have been produced there, although an investigation is still ongoing
as to the cause
of the fire.
Approximately 45 fire fighters eventually were on scene to fight the
blaze. The home owners were not in the home, but fire fighters rescued
a pit bull chained to a couch during a search
Fire officials then evacuated and took a
defensive approach.
“We had to create a perimeter to keep it from spreading to other homes
in the neighborhood,” Dyer said.
The fire was out at approximately 12:30 a.m.
on Friday.
Police and fire officials are still looking into what caused the blaze.
