NEW RIVER –  A suspicious package shutdown the northbound lanes on the Interstate 17 for about 90 minutes forcing traffic to exit in New River on March 5. The item in question ended up being an empty plastic pipe.

An Arizona Department of Transportation employee spotted the suspicious item around 9 a.m., which  was described as a “possible pipe bomb” on the side of the road near mile post 232 on I-17 going northbound, said Bart Graves, the Arizona Department of Safety Media Specialist.

DPS troopers with the Explosive Ordinance Unit responded to the scene, and inspected the item, which turned out to be an empty PVC pipe.  Once the situation had been deemed safe DPS was able to reopen the lanes, which was around 10 a.m.
