Recall election deadline nears
Staff Report ~ 3/3/2010

The deadline to vote in the recall election involving Carefree Mayor David Schwan is Tuesday.
Schwan, who won election to the Town Council in May 2007 and was reelected in May 2009, is opposed by John Traynor, a 9-year resident of Carefree.
The recall came about after 396 validated signatures were turned in on a recall petition, well above the 203 signatures required to force the recall vote.
While there are detractors of Schwan there also have been a number of supporters as 700 people have signed a petition in support of the mayor.
Ballots for the all-mail election were mailed Feb. 11.
The winner will take a regular seat on the council, and a mayor will be appointed by the council.
Traynor said issues like unrealistic financial management, erosion of civil liberties, and ever rising water rates, threaten the town’s future as businesses are either leaving or struggling to survive.
He furthers explains on his website traynorincarefree.com, “Unprecedented and unwelcome attempts by Political Action Committees to maintain control of town government have become menacing. It is clear that the time has arrived to end the discord, contempt, and character assassination that were so evident during several recent Town Council elections.”
Doug Stavoe, Peter Koteas and Bob Coady have endorsed Traynor’s candidacy while Susan Vanik and Vice Mayor Glenn Miller support Schwan.
Mailed ballots must be received by Maricopa County Elections by 7 p.m. on Tuesday. There is a ballot box in Town Hall, 8 Sundial Circle, if voters want to put their ballots in the box.
Voters who did not receive their ballots or wish to vote a provisional ballot or wish to drop their ballots in the ballot box can come in to Town Hall during regular business hours, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. up until Tuesday.
On Tuesday Town Hall will be open from 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. for those who wish to vote a replacement ballot or provisional ballot or place their ballots in the ballot box. Ballots turned in at Carefree Town Hall will be delivered to County officials that night.
Results of the recall are expected sometime March 12
